The National Statistics Office (NSO) is gearing for the holding of the National Workshop on Civil Registration, the biggest activity of the agency from August 8-10, 2006 in Zamboanga City.

NSO Civil Registration Division Director Lourdes Hufana was in the city over the weekend to confer with officials of the NSO provincial and regional offices led by Region 9 director Maqtahar L. Manulon and to lay the groundwork for the big event:

Hufana said some 1,000 civil registrars, mayors, medical records officers, judges and barangay secretaries from all over the country and all persons interested in civil registration matters are expected to converge in the city for the workshop.

The workshop done every two years and is aimed to provide the participants an avenue to share best practices that happened within the two years period. The same activity also seeks to hear issues and problems that the participants wanted to resolved. Dir. Hufana said the NSO will also present to the participants in the Zamboanga Work-shop the revised civil registry form - for birth and marriage, which will be used in future transactions. Outstanding local civil registry officials will also be awarded during the 3-day activity.

NSO Administrator and Civil Registrar General Carmelita Ericta will keynote the opening of the workshop. Meanwhile, Dir. Hufana said it was the participants to the civil registration workshop two years ago who selected Zamboanga City as the venue for this year's event.

It has been a practice for the NSO to ask the participants to choose the venue or site for the next activity. "We presented a number of cities but the most of them choose Zamboanga City", Hufana added.
