Introduction

Presidential Proclamation No. 647 (PP 647) officially recognized the essential role of statistics in policy formulation, planning and decision making for both government and the private sectors. This was signed by President Corazon C. Aquino on September 20, 1990 , declaring the annual observance of the NSM every October of each year.

One activity of NSM is the conduct of the Philippine Statistics Quiz annually since 1992. This years PSQ is 15 th in the series, which endeavor to test freshmen college students' knowledge of statistics and to generate public awareness on the importance of statistics in all development planning activities.

The Zamboanga City District Office (ZCDO) with the backstaff of National Statistics Office and the Philippine Statistical Association conducted the Philippine Statistics Quiz City Elimination Contest in Zamboanga City .

A total of 39 contestants coming from six colleges and universities city wide competed in the contest. Said universities and colleges were from Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Western Mindanao State University , Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College , Zamboanga City State College of Marine Science and Technology, Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School and the System Technology Institute College .

The PSQ city elimination was successfully done with the cooperation and supports of members of the regional steering committee, participating schools, coaches, contestants and the sponsors who work hand in hand for the realization of the PSQ City competition.

Preparatory Activities

•  Information and Dissemination

Letters of invitation were sent out to all universities and colleges in the city with PSQ primers and the four Information sheets for both contestants and coaches attached. This is for their information and reference.

B. Meeting of the 15 th PSQ City Elimination Regional Steering Committee 

Regional Director and chairman of the PSQ Regional Steering Committee Atty. Maqtahar L. Manulon invited the members of the PSQ Regional Steering Committee for the first RSC meeting on September 16, 2006 at NSO IX Conference Room, Zamboanga City at 2:00 in the afternoon. All members of the steering committee were presents. AO Adelaida Cuarte presided the meeting since RD Manulon is on official travel. Agenda's discussed were the PSQ information dissemination, date, time and venue of the PSQ City Elimination, the Working Committees, source of funding/solicitations and other matters.

Date and Venue

During the Regional Steering Committee Meetings, it was agreed that the conduct of the 15 th PSQ City Elimination would be at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University 3 rd floor LRC bldg, Zamboanga City on October 16, 2005 from 12:00-5:00 p.m.

Participating Schools

A total of seven colleges and universities joined in the PSQ city elimination. Among were Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), Universidad De Zamboanga (UZ), Zamboanga City State of Marine Science and Tehcnology (ZCSMST), Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC), Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School (ICAS) and System Technology Institute (STI) College.

Participating Contestants and Profiles

A total of 38 contestants and 7 coaches participated in the 15 th PSQ City Elimination coming from different colleges and universities in the city. Among were from Ateneo De Zamboanga that sent 2 contestants and one coach, Western Mindanao State University sent 3 contestants and one coach, ICAS sent 3 contestants and one coach, Universidad de Zamboanga sent 3 contestants and 2 coach, STI college sent 3 contestants and 1 coach and from ZCSPC that sent 1 contestant and 1 coach.

Contest Proper

The contest proper began with the reading of the first 10 questions for the first round through a power point presentation. Each question had time limit. After each questions the quizmaster asked the contestants to raise their correct answer through a flashcard when the buzzer sounds. Each correct answer has 1 point. As stipulated in the contest rules, the top 9 contestants in the first round will automatically advanced to the 2 nd round. In the 2 nd round, the quizmaster read another set of 10 questions. He then read and announced the number of contestants got correct answer. The scorer reflects the points in the tally board and tally sheet.
